GnollHack: Behind The Scenes
Have you ever wondered about the voices behind your favorite indie games? Well, let me take you on a behind-the-scenes journey of GnollHack, an indie dungeon exploration game, based on the super old school NetHack.
Here’s a fun fact: I’m the voice behind several characters in GnollHack! Yes, that’s right. If you’ve encountered the sassy Elder Quantum Mechanic, that’s yours truly adding a sprinkle of sass and attitude. Check out a snippet of my performance right here:
There’s something truly special about doing voiceover work for indie games development. It’s not just about reading lines off a script, for example. It’s about stepping into a character, embracing their quirks, and breathing life into them. Where one can play a dainty fairy in one scene and switch to a grumpy old troll in the next. The range is just mind-blowing!
And speaking of range, indie games like GnollHack give voiceover artists like me the freedom to explore and be creative. Have you ever heard of voice actors talking about “alternate takes”? These are where we get to amp up the energy for sassy, off-the-cuff remarks that characters might make, adding layers of depth and personality. And boy, do I relish those moments! There’s a unique thrill in delivering lines that make players chuckle or gasp in surprise.
So, if you’re a fan of games that offer not just great gameplay but also memorable character voices, I’ve got good news for you. You can now play GnollHack on Google Play. If you’re an Apple aficionado, it’s on the App Store too!
Dive in, explore the magical world, and listen closely. You might just recognize a voice or two! ????
Game voiceover is one of my faves, because you get to play a huge range of characters and be so sassy for alternate lines!
